UT Journalism professor speaks on loss of Ryan Wallace, victim in school bus crash

The crash occurred after 42-year old Jerry Hernandez crashed a concrete pump truck he was driving into a Hays CISD school bus returning from a field trip to the zoo on State Highway 21 in Bastrop County. McElory shared that Wallace was a smart student who developed a class about multimedia journalism at UT's Journalism School. She expressed her shock at the news and hopes his family can receive resources.

CBS Austin spoke on Thursday with Kathleen McElroy, a former UT professor of 33-year-old Ryan Wallace, the man killed in the Bastrop-Caldwell school bus crash last Friday.
"I'm just sure no family expects a 33-year-old at the beginning of his career to die so suddenly like this," McElroy said.

Wallace and 5-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, a Pre-Kindergarten student at Tom Green Elementary, died in the crash on March 22 after 42-year-old Jerry Hernandez crashed the concrete pump truck he was driving into a Hays CISD school bus that was returning from a field trip to the zoo with 44 students and 11 adults on board on State Highway 21 in Bastrop County.
She shared that Ryan was a super smart and attentive student who developed a class about multimedia journalism that UT's Journalism School still teaches to this day.
"We know people like Ryan could've made a difference in academia and it's a great loss," she added.
McElroy says she felt shocked for everyone involved when she heard the news and hopes his family can get the resources they might need.
