Parades, poetry and a free Scarface concert: 12 ways to observe Juneteenth in Austin

With festivals, concerts, parades and lectures, Austin has plenty of events marking the federal holiday of Juneteenth this year. Juneteenth, the end of slavery in the United States, was celebrated on June 19, 1865 by the U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, who informed enslaved people they were free, that they were. The holiday became federally recognized in 2021, but celebrations in Texas had long existed. Austin is set to host its own Juneteenth events, including parades, poetry, a free Scarface concert, and a festival celebrating the reopening of the historic Southgate-Lewis House.

Parades, poetry and a free Scarface concert: 12 ways to observe Juneteenth in Austin

Juneteeth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, over two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to inform enslaved people that they were free and to press enslavers to comply with the directive. Texas was the final Confederate state to have the proclamation announced.

The holiday became federally recognized in 2021, but even before its official status, celebrations in Texas were well-established.
