The City of Austin has made a power move by naming Ghizlane Badawi as the new permanent head honcho of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), ensuring the continuity of leadership at a time when AUS is undergoing a massive transformation. According to a memo from interim City Manager Jesus Garza, obtained by KXAN, Badawi has been the interim CEO and led the airport through the turbulence of a pandemic.

Badawi isn't new to these skies, with more than a decade of experience under her belt in the city’s aviation department. This leadership update aligns with an ambitious vision for the airport as it braces for a multi-billion dollar expansion including over 60 projects that are slated to spruce up the facility with upgrades like a Central Utility Plant, and a West Garage, among others. Garza, shedding light on the appointment, said, "We felt it imperative to bring stability to the AUD Team now as we move forward in earnest with several key projects, realizing time is of the essence."

Meanwhile, the airport isn't the only department getting a leadership facelift. Over at city hall, a new human resources director has been appointed. As detailed in a memo that Garza sent to the City Council, as reported by the Austin Monitor, Susan Sinz will be taking over the reins as HR director after having served the city of Largo, Florida, in the same capacity since 2003.

The appointments come at a critical juncture for Austin as the city embarks on a series of significant infrastructure projects, with both Badawi and Sinz playing pivotal roles in executing the city's broader strategic objectives. The City Council, also priming itself for the financial oversight of the airport overhaul, seems poised to tackle, the expected bills that could soar into the billions. In the months ahead, they will consider and scrutinize the particulars of the airport's modernization efforts, shaping Austin's gateway to the world for generations to come.
