AUSTIN, Texas — A total solar eclipse will be visible in Central Texas in less than two weeks, and We Are Blood is calling for blood donations ahead of it.

It anticipates a potential increased need for blood transfusions around the April 8 eclipse because of possible challenges with travel.

In partnership with We Are Blood, Austin-Travis County EMS and Williamson County EMS (WCEMS) each have special programs where select vehicles carry whole blood units to allow for the administration of blood transfusions in the field before a patient arrives at a hospital.

“As Central Texas welcomes an influx of visitors and hosts community-wide events, the impact on our blood supply and patients is of crucial concern," Nick Canedo, We Are Blood’s vice president of community engagement, said. “We’re calling on Central Texans to donate blood and platelets ahead of this momentous occasion, so we can prepare our hospitals and first responders for serving our communities."

The eclipse and the tourists it will bring to Central Texas is expected to impact area hospitals and first responder agencies. Between April 1 and April 9, at least 17 public events are being hosted across We Are Blood’s service area to celebrate the solar eclipse, and more than 10 school districts are planning to close on April 8.

Many Central Texas counties expect the population to double in the days surrounding the eclipse, with some counties – including Travis County – declaring states of emergency during those April dates to keep residents and visitors safe.

"WCEMS is dedicated to delivering life-saving interventions in the field for critically ill patients who live and visit Williamson County,” WCEMS Director Mike Knipstein said. “We greatly appreciate the assistance of We Are Blood in helping raise the awareness of the increased need for blood donations as we prepare for an increase in visitors in our community.”
