Here’s where various organizations and colleges will be hosting watch parties to view the April 8 total solar eclipse in the Austin area The University of Texas at Austin is hosting watch parties across its 40 acres from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with 16 locations offering free burnt orange eclipse glasses and a telescope. The Long Center and the Simons Foundation will host a free watch party on the Long Center’s lawn and H-E-B terrace. The first 1,000 attendees will be gifted eclipse tote bags. Nine branches of the Austin Public Library system will also host watch parties. Austin Community College is hosting four watch parties on its campuses, offering free eclipse glasses.

Generally in Austin, the partial eclipse will start around 12:17 p.m., reach totality for about two minutes at 1:35 p.m., and end by 2:58 p.m. Here are a variety of watch parties with a clear view of the sky in the Austin area.

The University of Texas at Austin will be hosting watch parties all across the 40 acres on April 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Affectionately labeled “Sun Spots,” these 16 locations will have free burnt orange eclipse glasses and a telescope for the ultimate viewing experience.

The Long Center and the Simons Foundation will be hosting a free watch party on the Long Center’s lawn and H-E-B terrace located at 701 W. Riverside Drive, Austin, TX 78704. The party, which will be hosted by Radiolab’s Molly Webster, will start at 11 a.m. on April 8 and run until 3 p.m. In addition, acclaimed writers Roxane Gay and Debbie Millman will lead visitors through a visual storytelling experience at the event.

The party will also offer guests eclipse-themed beer from local breweries and the first 1,000 attendees will be gifted eclipse tote bags. Everyone will be able to get a free pair of eclipse glasses.

Nine branches of the Austin Public Library system will also be hosting watch parties, which vary in length but roughly start around 11 a.m. and end around 2 p.m. While the city has been distributing free eclipse glasses since March 11, the library locations will also have a limited number of glasses reserved for attendees.

Located at 500 E. Fourth St., Austin, TX 78701, Hilton Austin will be hosting a free watch party on its rooftop pool deck on floor 8 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Guests can indulge in a variety of themed cocktails and mocktails, including Lunar Lemonade, Solar Sunrise and Total Eclipse Elixir. Free eclipse glasses will be provided to attendees.

Austin Community College will be hosting four watch parties across their Round Rock, Highland, Cypress Creek and South Austin campuses on April 8 complete with experts present to answer any questions about the eclipse in real time. ACC is also offering eclipse glasses to students, staff, and the community at all of its campuses.
