No. 4/5 Softball preview: No. 1/1 Oklahoma

Texas set to host first top-five matchup since April 2003. The top-ranked and three-time defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners are set to play against the top-five ranked Texas Longhorns in a three-game series starting on Friday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday, April 7 at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin. Beth Mowins, Michele Smith, and Jessica Mendoza will be on the television broadcasts for the weekend series. This series will feature the top two teams in Division I softball in team batting average and feature the third and fourth best pitching staffs in the nation. Texas is looking for its first series win over Oklahoma since the 2009 season.

AUSTIN, Texas – It's the most anticipated regular season matchup of the 2024 season: Oklahoma at Texas.

With the opportunity to take a sizable lead in the Big 12 Conference standings, the top-ranked and three-time defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners travel down I-35 to the Forty Acres for a three-game series against the top-five ranked Texas Longhorns.

The series begins on Friday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m., with Saturday's game slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. The three-game weekend series will conclude on Sunday, April 7, when the two teams take the field at Red & Charline McCombs Field at 1 p.m.

TELEVISION: Beth Mowins (play by play), Michele Smith (analyst) and Jessica Mendoza (analyst) will serve as the talent for all three of the television broadcasts on the weekend.

• Heading into this weekend's three-game series against Oklahoma, third-year Longhorn has connected for at least one home run against Sooner pitching in each of her collegiate softball season.

• Scott, and are the only active Texas softball student-athletes to hit at least one home run in each season playing Oklahoma.

• Martinez is the only active Longhorn softball student-athlete to have hit multiple home runs against the Sooners in a single season after hitting two against Oklahoma throughout the 2023 season.

• The last time Oklahoma played Texas at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, the Longhorns halted the Sooners' 40-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory behind a seven-inning, 100-pitching performance from Hailey Dolcini.

• The game capped a three-game series that saw a record 4,883 total fans watch the Longhorns and Sooners play in Austin over the weekend.

• The contest also featured Cat Osterman's No. 8 being retired in front of a then-single game record 1,698 fans.

• This weekend, Texas will be looking for its first series win over Oklahoma since the 2009 season, when the Longhorns knocked off the Sooners, 15-6 and 9-7, on March 28 and March 29, respectively.

• Throughout the series history, Texas is 11-20 all time against Oklahoma in games played in Austin and is looking for its first back-to-back home victories over the Sooners since March 28 and March 29, 2009.

• The Longhorns have never won three consecutive home games against the Sooners and has only won four consecutive games over Oklahoma once: April 11, April 12, May 2, and May 4 during the 2003 season.

• This weekend's three-game series between Oklahoma and Texas will feature the top two teams in Division I softball in team batting average.

• The series will also feature the third and fourth best pitching staffs in the nation — top two in the Big 12 Conference — as the Sooners boost a 1.40 earned run average (ERA), while the Longhorns have a 1.41 ERA.

• The weekend series will be the first home top-five matchup for Texas since the 2003 season, when the then-No. 5 Longhorns hosted the then-No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners on April 11 and April 12, 2003.

• Texas won both of those matchups, 1-0 and 2-1.

• The 1-0 result on April 11 lasted nine innings.

• It was the first of three 1-0 victory for Texas over Oklahoma on the season.
