A former employee at Austin's energy utility, Mark Ybarra, allegedly paid $980,000 in taxpayer funds to fake companies with bank accounts belonging to his family members. YBarra was given a city credit card from 2018 to 2023 to hire repair companies for city buildings, but only eight of these companies were confirmed as legitimate. The remaining $580,000 went to businesses that were missing basic information such as an address and phone number. Yabra resigned in 2023 after questions were raised about the invoices. Most of the purchases were approved by former Facility Service Supervisor Sammy Ramirez. The scandal highlights the vulnerability of government agencies spending large amounts of money relative to the population of their areas.
