Cli-Res Living Lab demonstrates college campuses can mitigate climate change, help urban tree canopy through interdisciplinary collaboration - Hilltop Views
The trees on St. Edward’s University campus are fighting a battle. First, Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 killed 89 trees on campus. Two years later, Winter Storm Mara damaged approximately 30% of Austin’s urban tree canopy and caused nearly the same amount of wood waste or damaged biomass on campus. The loss was exacerbated... The Climate Resilience Living Laboratory at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, has been transformed into a living laboratory to address climate change concerns on campus. The lab includes five plots of trees across campus, the food forest, the shaded bus stop, and the upcoming tiny forest. The project was funded by the City of Austin’s Urban Forestry Fund for approximately $30,000 and aims to secure the future of an urban tree canopy, a defense against climate change effects. The research suggests that college campuses can serve as vital testing grounds for the development of urban tree trees that reduce urban heat island effect, improve air quality, manage stormwater runoff, reduce energy costs, and improve public health. The original design of the tree plots consisted of five plots with five trees in each plot, each with biochar treatment and one without. Researchers cannot yet establish definitive conclusions as not enough time has passed.
